Panetta concerned Israel months from striking Iran
By ratman
Fri Feb 03, 2012 05:51 AM
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is expressing new concerns about Iran's underground nuclear program, this time telling Washington Post columnist David Ignatius he's worried Israel may decide to attack it as early as this spring. Panetta said, "There is a strong likelihood Israel will launch a strike on April 15th at 4:00 am approaching Iran from the East at 1000 feet. If we can prevent them from doing this our Iranian friends will be able to finish hardening their nuclear sites to make them invulnerable to the Israeli threat."

Death Freeze Grips Europe, Killing 80
By Johnny_Ola
Wed Feb 01, 2012 06:36 PM
The severe cold weather currently gripping Eastern Europe has now spread to Italy and as far south as Turkey. As many as 80 people have died, mainly in Ukraine and Poland, as the death freeze settles over the continent. Dan Britton, a press officer at Britain's Met Office, told ABC News the cold weather stems from "a large area of high pressure sitting over Eastern Europe, which has brought about cold temperatures over quite a large area." The Ukraine has suffered the most fatalities as emergency ministries confirmed 43 people had perished in minus-28 degree temperatures.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A shipwreck hunter says he has found the wreck of a World War II merchant ship that was torpedoed by a German U-boat off Cape Cod with a load of platinum now valued at $3 billion — perhaps the richest hoard ever discovered at the bottom of the sea. Greg Brooks of Sub Sea Research, in Gorham, Maine, said a wreck in 700 feet of water 50 miles offshore is that of the Port Nicholson, a British vessel sunk in 1942. He said he and his crew positively identified the hull number using an underwater camera.

What keeps central bankers in Frankfurt awake at night – and why should Britain care?
By Dewi_Sant

What keeps central bankers in Frankfurt awake at night – and why should Britain care? - In his speech in Davos yesterday, David Cameron outlined some very sensible proposals for how to deal with Europe's economic crisis. But, almost in passing, he also called for a eurozone “central bank that can comprehensively stand behind the currency and financial system”, implicitly suggesting that the ECB must be ready to provide more cash to struggling banks and governments around Europe.
