After 64 years, can of rendered pig fat still safe to eat.
The US ran a huge aid program to help Europe rebuild after WW2, and generous citizens of the US regularly shipped packages of food to help out. In 1948, one of these packages was sent to student Hans Feldmeier, now 87.
Mr. Feldmeier gratefully consumed the rest of the package, but he kept the can of Swift lard for emergencies.
64 years later, he discovered that same can. He had the can tested, and when told that it was still safe to eat, he ate some with black bread. As he explained,
"I just didn't want to throw it away."
A food safety expert, Frerk Feldhusen, said the rendered pig fat was somewhat gritty, nearly tasteless and hard to dissolve, but still quite edible.

Beef dripping is better. Beef fat with the meat juices and essences from a beef roast with the herbs and spices, spread on thickly sliced toasted, locally baked English bread. Toasted over an open coal fire, a fuckin' delicious health hazard. I forgot to mention a shake of sea salt and some ground black pepper on the top. No butter is required. |
