North America makes out pretty well.
According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, college graduation rates in developed countries have increased nearly 200% in the past 50 years.
A recent report by 24/7 Wall Street shows that the countries with the most highly educated citizens are also some of the wealthiest countries in the world, and that the countries that invest the most in education have the most educated people.
The top ten countries are:
1. Canada
2. Israel
3. Japan
4. United States
5. New Zealand
6. South Korea
7. Norway
8. United Kingdom
9. Australia
10. Finland
Interestingly, these top 10 countries spend less on public education than other OECD countries; eight of the countries on the list rely the least on public funding for education.

Hmmm... Only 2 Yurp countries (3 if you count the UK), and none of them made the top five? 19 Replies to The 10 most educated countries in the world are... |

I wonder where California would fall if it were on that list as a country? Hell, in my city alone there are three major universities: UC San Diego, San Diego State University and University of San Diego with about 70,000 students. |

I wonder how they count...
e.g. Japan doesn't seem that educated at all... I've been there and talked to people. Most of them don't know much about the world around, they usually read comics not books, but perhaps they have decent technical schools which of course shouldn't count as it is just job far from general knowledge.
according to PISA survey South Korea and Finland are the best within OECD

remember Japan has no immigrants, they HATE IMMIGRANTS in Japan
so they have to have community colleges that are really good, they are as hard as Harvard or Yale
the Japs have one of the lowest birth rates in the world, they are holding on but sooner or later there will be so many old people compared to young that the economy will crash |

In 2010, not 2012.
I don't know if they published any results later,
Finnish schools have been champions for some years now. |

I can't say much about Canada, Israel, Japan, US, New Zealand, South Korea, Australia..
But regarding Scandinavia, Sweden is way better than Norway. A part of my family is living in Norway, and even Norwegians reckon that their education system sucks.
and UK N°8, be serious for a sec mate. |

These results make no sense for a very simple reason.
The variable that is observed here consists in the % of people with a post-secondary education, and each country has its own post-secondary system. It's no wonder France does not appear here : "tertiary or pre-university education" does not exist there; you go to the university immediately after you've completed your secondary studies. In Canada, for instance, before you attend the university, you go to a college (or Cegep in Quebec) that you finish in two years. In Europe, it usually takes three years before you get your first degree at the university. And in no way, of course, should you compare a collegial degree with a Bachelor degree. That does not stop the morons who build these charts though, especially when it makes the anglo-saxon system look soooo good. |

I hold both french and canadian degrees, Balls. My butt does not hurt, Balls. I'm pointing out biases and very obvious flaws in this "study". I'm not surprised though if it passes way above your head. |

I guess it all depends on how you define "most educated".
In the US, you can get into college
a) by being a good student
or b) by being able to afford tutition fees
or c) by being good at basketball or football.
In France, you have to pass the Bac. Period. |

This ranking is a joke. might as well count school buildings per capita, or the size of classrooms.
By the way, the US has obviously the best higher education system, but interestingly it relies heavily upon brain drain, as primary and secondary education in the country count as average among developed countires at most. |
