DEQUINCY — A $1.6 million bond has been set on a DeQuincy man arrested for allegedly raping and beating a 94-year-old woman, who suffered a heart attack after the assault.

The suspect, Gabe McKeel Jr., 48, was booked Saturday in the Calcasieu Correctional Center on charges of aggravated rape, aggravated burglary and second-degree battery.

DeQuincy Police Detective Tom Threet said officers responded to a 911 call at about 10:52 p.m. Saturday at the 200 block of Jackson Street.

Threet said the victim knew her attacker because he did handy work for her.

He said McKeel was armed with a knife when he entered her home, attacked and raped her. He said the victim did not receive any stab wounds, but her face was badly beaten.

Threet said McKeel also attempted to steal a “valuable item” from her home.

He said McKeel has an extensive criminal history of burglary and was released from Phelps Correctional Center about eight months ago.

Threet said the victim is in stable condition at a Lake Charles hospital.

“There has been an outpouring of people — there were 12 people that came over to help board the house after the attack to make it safer for her,” Three said. “There were more than 30 people at the hospital to check on her.”

Judge Ron Ware set McKeel’s bond.
