Aerodynamically efficient shape causes red faces.

The Argus One Lighter-than-air UAV, named after the all-seeing Greek god with 100 eyes, seems to meet all Pentagon specifications. It can carry 30 lbs (14 kg) of high-tech sensors, cameras and communications gear, can hover between 10,000 & 20,000 feet (even in rough weather), has improved flight stability & aerodynamic control, and has a extremely low radar footprint. It can be assembled and launched in hours from almost anywhere, including mountainous terrain, and can be remotely piloted by ground control or sent on a GPS-controlled pre-programmed route.

The manufacturer, World Surveillance Group Inc, claims the new LTA UAV is a "virtual stealth" craft, since the only radar reflecting material used is in the payload bay. The flexible, non-rigid body not only gives it improved flight characteristics, but also means it is easily stored and transported, taking up far less space than conventional craft.

Unfortunately, the craft looks like, well, a "flying spermatozoa."

Defense Dept officials and WSGI have both refused to comment on the "sperm spy plane's" embarrassing shape.

Handy for videoing above a nuclear reactor fire?

Surveying damage after a major quake?

Border control?

Riot control?

etc.

Personally I wopuld design a more `semi-rigid` saucer shaped craft with the new thin film solar cells to power a set of fans all driven from one centrally located motor/battery unit. Day/nite Telescopic Camera mounted below with full remote facilities to the control unit and to regional staff; via the net and/or other communication links.

But thats me.

Dishing out the `Free` ideas again.
;)
