Aibust says "The A380 is safe to fly," yet the Federal Secretary of the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association says " I would be worried that Airbus aren't taking seriously the ever increasing number of cracks being found in the wings of their A380 aircraft.
Put it this way, I wouldn't put my family on an A380 at the moment ,"
Airbus acknowledged a combination of internal manufacturing and design flaws as more examples of wing cracks arose during checks on the A380.
The cracks were caused by factors including the choice of aluminum alloy for some of the 4,000 brackets in the wings as well as a type of bolt that put too much stress on the metal.
To deal with the unforeseen cracking problem, Airbus is changing its manufacturing processes to ensure smooth operation until at least the next four-year maintenance checks.
Longer term, it plans to switch to a different alloy, restoring the aircraft to its normal lifespan of 25 years-plus.

Now this is using proven technology. Solutions exist and at least issues are found before a catastrophic failures occurs.
I shudder at the thought of Boing that took a step further by using extensively yet unproven technology, carbon fiber panels, beams, that don't give any sign of failure before it breaks suddenly.
That remind me why in coal mine before the time of strain gages, they were still using wood for truss, because it would warn you in case of imminent failure. |

Now try telling that to the families of the victims of the catastrophic Air France flight "with proven technology". |

Cracking on such wings are not something new. However, what about craking on dreamliner's wings ?
Like the 787, the new Airbus plane will be built mainly of lightweight, plastic-based composites. However, while the 787 features a new fuselage design, with barrel-shaped sections fastened together, Airbus is sticking with the more traditional method of attaching composite panels to a frame.
Bob Smith, vice-president for advanced technology at Honeywell (HON), the biggest contractor on the A350, says the Airbus plane has a "lower risk profile" than the 787. Smith reckons the A350 will be slightly less fuel-efficient than the Boeing plane, but that Airbus will price it at a slight discount to the comparable 787 model.
Carbon fiber won't show stress by cracking. Boeing said they have created special control processes. And this is particularly worring. This technology doesn't have enough background to reduce the risk profile of the dreamliner. |

It seems that both airbust and boing are putting peoples lives at risk in the pursuit of bigger profits. We ought to make the executives of both companies fly on every flight of their new planes until all the bugs are ironed out. That'll make the bastards sit up and pay attention to their engineers instead of the bloody bean counters. |

exactly. everyone know that airliners don't really need wings. they're just for show

With Geared Turbofan Orders In Hand, Pratt Priming Its CT Suppliers For Huge Ramp-Up Of Work
The first delivery of an Airbus narrow-body plane with a Pratt engine on it is nearly four years away, but the surge in manufacturing parts work that's coming from the massive numbers of geared turbofan engines in the pipeline starts much, much sooner.
That's good news for Pratt's suppliers in Connecticut. The work will support thousands of jobs in the state, though no one has a count of just how many people the Pratt subcontractors will hire.
From this year to 2014 "will be the biggest jump," said Kenneth Flanagan, president of Glastonbury's Flanagan Industries, an aerospace parts maker with 106 employees and $23 million in annual sales. "That is when we are going to get slammed."

Rhode Island won hands down.
Texas:

Do you remember Air France and faulty Pitot tubes story, frog? The issue too was discovered "before a catastrophic failures occurs". And then the catastrophic failure still occurred. That's why Fucking Euros need to feel as much pressure as possible |

That's comforting. I feel so much safer knowing that, if the plane I'm flying on was manufactured after this date, that the odds of the wings falling off in mid-flight are greatly reduced, provided it's been in service less than 4 years. |
