I understand now why the American were so enthusiastic about our Ration when we met them in the military camps of West Germany...

No wonder american are so fat, they keep eating to try to find something edible and tasty. A lost cause, indeed |

It wasn't the cheese, Mal. It was that little bottle of "eau de vie." |

Hmm. We were used to clean our rifle with it. Is it the use you did with? We called it "le coup de gniole" (shot of brandy) by reference to the traditions of our glorious ancestors before charging bayonnet fixed the german MG at Verdun!
My ration box were more recent. Only "light" Gauloises cigarettes. And the famous "bocage normand" soup! And the "SNCF" toilet paper! Ideal to, not to wipe, but spread! And what about the "Pain de Guerre" ? Work for dentists!
The best was the aniseed capsule to put in the water! The only eatable stuff in this ration!
Edit: that's surprising. It is marked 1985 and the cigarettes are not "light". They changed this ration box around 1988/1989 for a better one! |

I don't drink, but most cooks & supply sergeants do.
That little bottle made wonderful trading material. For some odd reason, batteries are hard to come by in the military supply system. I was able to trade the cognac for all the BA-3030s and BA-3058s we needed. |

Indeed, I reckon Burger King was far better than the others. But my barbecue sauce was better than anything you could find in the US, because I was using real french mustard and honey.
Sarah Lee cheese cakes were also fine but the only thing I miss are the soft shell crabs that I used to cook in simmering oil, then trhow some Tabasco then plenty of wisky and light it up.
Yet the most terrible thing I dreaded were the birthday parties and their awfull cakes and jellies ! I even throw up when I see them in a movie ! |
