Euro May Keep Falling, Dragging Down Rest of Market (karma: 3)  en>fr fr>en

Markets were unimpressed by the recent EU summit where European leaders boldly pledged to do something serious, at some date in the indefinite future, that would probably help, maybe.

The euro could be headed for a long slide—and possibly take stocks and commodities with it.

The beleaguered currency skidded Monday, as the European leaders' summit failed to bolster confidence in their ability to stem the sovereign debt crisis. And with nothing on the horizon from the European Union policymakers in the near future, the currency is likely to continue to slide into the new year.

At its low Monday, the euro was down 1.5 percent at 1.3168. The euro's decline accompanied a drop in risk assets, with the S&P 500 down more than 2 percent, gold down nearly 3 percent and oil down 1.6 percent.

The euro has a tight correlation to other markets and frequently moves in tandem with risk assets, like stocks and commodities. That does not bode well for a "Santa rally," which many analysts had been expected to take the stock market higher into the year end.

U.S. stocks have acted better than European shares, as they have been responding to improving economic news in the U.S. Analysts also note that stocks could be cheered if Congress agrees to extend the payroll tax cut, estimated to be worth a half to full percent of GDP growth.

Dump them in Israel or something?

of course the bankers always blame Euros and Poms for being welfare bludgers, and require " austerity measures ". I bet the average dole bludger in Europe has never been gifted as much public money as a failed bank!

1 EUR = US$ 1.29184 as of 2005.04.12 21:39 Universal Time (GMT).

On Thursday:

We'll just have to wait and see once the dust settles, won't we Fryer Gecko? I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunity to make a quick buck for "savvy investors" like yourself and a definite possibility it will all blow up in your face :D

If you take the fun nationalistic rantings about some soccer match seriously, that's your lapse of judgment and not my problem to worry about. I'm still pro Europe and simultaneously EU skeptic as always, because I dislike the direction the EU is takingin general. Whether I'm pro Euro (currency) will depend on how the current leadership organizes the financial system for the Eurozone after this shitstorm and we're slowly approaching the moment of truth in that regard.

I'm practical about all of this, not passionate. I realize what the benefits for our businesses (specifically German ones) of having an open market and a mutual currency are, a positive that can easily be offset by the institutionalization of a transfer union, corruption by an unchecked and corrupt EU bureaucracy and the ongoing privileged treatment of financial profiteers.

Right now I am unable to formulate a definite pro or anti opinion, because too many things are in motion and I won't join in the frantic emotional populism on either side until it is clear where we're headed. If the course is going to be set towards serfdom of productive citizens, which is a very real possibility, I will definitely dedicate a lot of energy and action to work against it, in any way that I can.

Populism at its best.
Maybe it's time we all split up and recreate an economical zone based on solidarity with friendly countries. Fuck off, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Hungary... of course UK.

I'm also curious who it is you mean by "we".

Do you think the rest of the EU block (excluding those nations listed) will readily follow France into a new alliance of your own design because what... you feel you are the fabulous "grande nation", culturally superior and your language sounds so gay (I mean happy of course)?

If so, you seriously need to re-examine your self-perception and more importantly the perception others have of you, because there is an obvious disconnect. I let you discover what that is exactly :D

It's amazing how some French still think French leadership is self-evident without bringing anything to the table.

The EU can only make sense on the basis of mutual self-interest and that includes (not presumes) German self-interest. Everything else is just maneuvering and posturing. It is in no way "populism" if you identify where your own interests lie and on this basis evaluate if the deal that is on the table is right for you or not. That's common sense.

Dear, you don't know much about Europe, do you?
The CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) was established to protect all of the European farmers against French farmers in a free market zone (France was at that time the second exporter in agricultural products, way ahead of all the other Euro countries)

Regarding industry, are you talking about Renault that bought Nissan and soon, one of your car companies?.

To bratwurst: You're a fucking populists as selfish as a roastbeef who only thinks of the EU as a free market zone that must bring benefits to your country in a short term.
That was not the point of the UE. That was solidarity and peace on the continent. If you forgot the basics, just fuck off.
I won't even mention the usual corruption of the European bureaucracy...
Go fuck yourself Kraut with your British and Dutch friends.

Ouah, am fucking impressed, French language sounds gay... Are you a member of FF?

You can easily imagine how much I give a fuck about the mind of a Francophobe kraut in here

Sharing the European debt amongst all the European countries is totally dumb. It's because France still believes it is a superior nation bla bla bla.
No, that's just solidarity, a pillar of the EEC, you tard. Greece, Italy and Spain need growth, not austerity

The EU can only make sense on the basis of mutual self-interest and that includes (not presumes) German self-interest. Everything else is just maneuvering and posturing. Keep in mind, you tard, that your demography is collapsing and you will need fucking soon the help of the population you look down on at this very moment.

We promise we won't forget what Krauts are doing since the last 6 months.
