Reginald Cleaver, 89, was killed in a car crash earlier this week.

Cleaver, an RAF flight engineer, was held as a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft III, also known as Sagan, when his plane was shot down in 1943. He eluded capture for five weeks before being captured by the SS and was threatened with execution as a spy.

Designated a "bad boy" by the Germans, he was sent to Sagan, which had been set aside especially for prisoners with a tendency to escape. While at Sagan he assisted other prisoners in what would become known as the "Great Escape," manufacturing fake German badges & uniforms to assist prisoners in their escape.
