Two things might make you join the site - incomprehension '"Why do they hate us so much?") and outrage ("How dare they hate us so much?").
Don't sign up with the hope that you'll change American mentalities. First of all, most people here are having fun (it may take a while to adapt to the fact), and those who are reaaaally far out you have no chance to reach out to.
I'll say it again, I've been there.
