New York's dogs tops? Chicagoans steamed

It's enough to make you choke on your sport pepper.

New York has been deemed the city with the best hot dogs by a new poll from the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, edging out Chicago by a mere 2 percentage points.

Chicago hot dog aficionados dismissed the results and, just as quickly, put on their game face.

"They don't know good from the crap they've been served. That's all. And you can put that in the New York Times," said Maurie Berman, owner of Superdawg on the Northwest Side.

"Ow," said Howard Eirinberg, president of Vienna Beef. "We would challenge any New York hot dog to a taste-off anywhere, anytime."

The nationwide poll was conducted through random phone interviews with 900 people.

Twenty-eight percent of respondents backed New York, while 26 percent said they preferred Chicago. Dallas, Los Angeles and Denver rounded out the list.

"I have real sympathies because I happen to be from Chicago," said Janet Riley, spokeswoman for the Washington, D.C.-based council, which conducted the poll because July is National Hot Dog Month. "I know how seriously Chicagoans take their hot dogs."

Ketchup?

A Chicago-style hot dog, as anyone who considers himself a Chicagoan would know, is an all-beef dog in a steamed poppyseed bun, topped with mustard, neon green relish, chopped onion, tomato slices, a pickle spear, sport peppers and celery salt.

A New York-style hot dog varies depending on who's making it but generally includes mustard and sauerkraut in a plain bun. Onions, relish and -- horror of horrors -- ketchup are typical add-ons.

"This is where franks grew up," said Kevin Albinder, manager of Katz's Delicatessen on Manhattan's Lower East Side, where hot dogs sell for $2.60.

"I don't know how a hot dog with ketchup could win any sort of taste competition," sniffed Eirinberg at Vienna Beef.

Chicagoans might be consoled to know the Windy City ranks above New York when it comes to the nation's top hot dog-eating stadiums.

According to National Hot Dog and Sausage Council statistics, Wrigley Field ranks third, behind L.A.'s Dodger Stadium and Denver's Coors Field, in hot dog consumption. Yankee Stadium is fourth, and U.S. Cellular Field ranks 10th.

johna:
Nope. Boudin is American.

No, boudin is very French. It goes way back to long before the French were expelled from l'Acadie and settled in Louisiana. The famous Boudin Bakery in San Francisco has the same name but that's a coincidence. I think Cajun boudin might be different from traditional boudin, though. I think you use rice and perhaps no blood? Whereas the French boudin is mostly pork and seasoned blood...no rice.

johna:
In Toronto, Canada hotdogs are the only kind of street food allowed by law . The law sets extremely high (almost unachievable) requirements for street-food vendors, with an exception for "pre-cooked meat products in the form of wieners or similar products to be served on a bun". That results in a greater competition amoung vendors and excellent quality of the hotdogs in the city.

I never heard of this before but I've been to Toronto and I've eaten their street hotdogs. They were all very good. And now that you mention it, it was the only type of street food I saw. It's been a while since I've been there though. And considering Toronto's changing demographics, I'd be very surprised if they didn't allow Chinese food vendors on the street as well.

And OldLyme, I think choucroute refers just to sauerkraut, not the sausages (or links). What you had in your picture was a traditional Alsacian choucroute garnie (all dressed) which is a huge pile of sauerkraut covered with sausages, ham knuckle, smothered in goose fat. If you can survive it, it's supposed to be really good.
