Failed treasury auction portends Egyptian disaster
By PistolPierre
Sat Feb 04, 2012 12:24 PM
Egypt cannot raise money in order to import food. 40,000,000 Egyptians live on $2 a day, spending half on food. Many towns have already seen bread riots. Egypt's government tried selling $580 million worth of Treasury bills with yields of 16% on January 22. Only a third of the bonds sold. The Egyptian Central Bank will most likely devalue the currency, causing a rise in food prices.

Austerity, moi? Nicolas Sarkozy spends £10k a day on food and keeps 121 cars under his palace
By poz_2000
Mon Feb 06, 2012 03:45 AM
Nicolas Sarkozy has been promising to cut back on his presidential spending, but he’s actually splashing out £10,000 a day on food and keeps 121 cars under the Elysee Palace, according to a new book. Socialist MP Rene Dosiere, in L'argent de l'État (Money from the State), sets out what he sees as extraordinary excesses by the French President. In the explosive book, he accuses Sarkozy of ‘ignoring the most elementary principles of the separation between private and public accounts’.

French socialists’ Latin revolt against Germany
By FrogFryer
Sun Feb 05, 2012 02:43 PM
The Carolingian union is all that anybody in French public life can really remember. It worked marvellously for two generations, levering French power on the global stage, and the euro was of course their own creation, intended to tie down a reunited Germany with “silken cords”. How can they now face the awful truth that this elegant strategy has blown up in their faces, enthroning Germany as undisputed hegemon?

In PIP implant scandal, a ragged european safety net exposed
By FrogFryer
Fri Feb 03, 2012 04:59 PM
In June 2000, when American medical regulators posted a warning letter on the Internet about problems at a breast-implant maker in southern France, French authorities didn't pay much attention. A U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspection had found some products manufactured by Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) were "adulterated," the letter said. French regulators say they can't be sure now if they even saw it on the FDA's website. In the following decade, substandard silicone implants made by PIP were implanted into hundreds of thousands of unwitting women around the world. The French government in December advised 30,000 women to have their implants removed, warning the devices had an unusually high rupture rate and may contain industrial-grade silicone.

Could France show Europe how to move left?
By jerrylewissux
Sun Jan 29, 2012 07:39 PM
It is possible, though, to conceive of another, quite different scenario that would have the effect of changing the political face of today's Europe almost as much. Instead of handing more power to the far right, Europe could take a decisive turn to the left. France, where the first round of the presidential election takes place on 22 April, will be the first test of this hypothesis. Going left is the way to go frogs, take your rightful place leading europe.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy will announce tax rises Sunday, including a hike of 1.6 percentage points in value-added sales tax on goods and services, government sources said. The aim is to shift the burden of paying for social security from employers to consumers in a reform, condemned by opposition socialists, that Sarkozy's centre-right government wants to push through before elections in April that he is tipped to lose.
